The fabric that you hold in your hand is a fragment of the forest, uninhibited and liberated. It is Tassar or “Wild Silk”.
The timeless beauty of Tassar (Kosa in Sanskrit) has captivated people’s imaginations for centuries. This exquisite yarn is obtained from silkworms reared in the wild forests on local species like Sal, Asan and Arjun, making it a true representative of the flora of a place. Interestingly, in Odisha, it is produced by tribal communities living in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Gajapati.
Tassar is highly valued for its natural dull gold colour and its property to refract two different shades of a colour at different angles. This unique feature makes the wearer of tassar silk stand out in a crowd, with every movement beautifully highlighted in a merry dance of colours. Tassar silk is more textured than any other variety of silk. It is also more porous, and therefore, feels lighter and cooler than the other varieties of silk. This makes Tassar extremely wearable in warmer parts of the world.
